A LITTLE BIT ABOUT US
Friends of the Red Knot is a club whose members are trying to save
the Red Knot bird from extinction by getting it placed on the Endangered Species List and by advocating for a ban
on the harvesting of Delaware Bay horseshoe crabs.The club was formed when a few students at the GreenMount School in Baltimore,
MD decided to get together and look for ways to help the Red Knot bird. To learn more about the club and how it was formed,

WHAT IS A RED KNOT?
The Red Knot is a small, plump, reddish shorebird. Every year, the Red Knot rufa subspecies migrates from
Tierra del Fuego in Chile and Argentina to the Arctic region of Canada to breed. To learn more about the Red Knot and why

DELAWARE BIRD-A-THON RAISES $38,000 TO PURCHASE
VITAL SHOREBIRD HABITAT
The 2nd Annual Delaware Bird-A-Thon was held throughout the state of Delaware between May 3rd
and 11th, 2008. Most of the $38,000 raised will be used to purchase land in Delaware that provides vital migratory
habitiat for the Red Knot and other shorebirds.
The Friends of the Red Knot team identified 102 different species of birds in a 24 hour period, and raised
$1,019.22. The five Friends of the Red Knot kids who participated in the Bird-A-Thon were honored at the awards picnic with
the prize for most species identified and funds collected by a youth team. For more information, see our News and Events page

WRITE LETTERS
You can write letters to people in the Government who are in a position to help the Red Knot. To write to
Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne, your U.S. Senators, or Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley, click here.
